A lot of things happen in volume 1, yet I didn't realize that until I
went back after so many years. The premise is explained, partially
anyway, and many of the main characters besides Alpha are introduced,
including Takahiro, Misago, and Kokone.
Going back after reading later volumes, you can see how the art style
settles down after the first few volumes. Without a doubt, this is
one of the most wonderfully illustrated manga I've ever seen. Combine
that with the "timelessness" of the story, and I can't recommend this
enough. First volume was first released in 1995, yet it's still in
print, so I highly recommend you pick them all up while you can.
