Tsubomi vol. 1

"Girl Friends" by Morinaga Miruku (Milk) is so good, I got hooked on yuri these days, so I figured an anthology like this would give me an opportunity to see many different kinds of yuri manga.

There are 17 different stories in this book, mostly written by different authors. Some of these stories are one shot, whereas many others are series. The ones that are series would continue in the next volume of Tsubomi. There are cute ones, serious ones, funny ones, boring ones, and so on. Obviously, some I like, and some I don't.

"Himitsu no Recipe" by Morinaga Milk is, well, okay. It's not quite at the level of "Girl Friends," but then, it's also simpler.

Ugawa Hiroki's "Koburiawase" has eerily beautiful art. It's a totally different kind of "yuri." In fact, I didn't even know such genre existed.

"Ebisu-san to Hotei-san" by Kidzuki Akira + Satou Nanki is possibly my favorite series in this manga. It has somewhat unconventional art, but it didn't take too long for me to adjust to it. It describes a fairly complex relationship and does so very naturally. It's so good, I wish it were released on its own.

"Tsuide no Hanashi" by Ootomo Megane has a great satisfying ending (or near ending).

"Kokoro Sketch" by Hoshiai Hiro is touching, in a way. Something feels missing, though.

"Ichigo Biyori" by Izumi Yuuki has very cute art. It's not a very deep story, though.

"Shimaism" by Yoshitomi Akihito is, well, standard routine from the author. If you're familiar with other works by the author, you'll likely agree. It's mostly just a pastime type yuri. In a way, BLUE DROP was an unusually serious work for him, at least the short story one was.

Others I didn't mention didn't leave much impression on me.
