Animephile Rating: F (4.5)
- Video Scan Type : interlaced-TV (-2.5) -
Some interlaced anime DVD's don't 'feather' too much because movements
happen between frames, not between fields. Unfortunately, this one
isn't one of those. There are a lot of feathering on this DVD. :(
- Aspect Handling : standard (-0.0)
- Compression : -0.5 -
They literally threw lots of bits at it (high bit-rate), but they
should learn that throwing bits at the problem isn't the fix-all
solution.
- Video Separation : -1.0
- Scene Transition : -1.0 -
Transitions are extremely bad on this DVD. On top of the distortions,
many transitions occur in between fields.
- Calibration : -0.5 -
Contrast could be a little better. What's funny (or sad, depending on
how you look at it) is that the opening sequences are fabulous.
Unfortunately, once the actual show starts, contrast goes away.
Comments:
As mentioned above, opening sequences have fantastic saturation and
constrast. Feathering also does not occur much during opening
sequences. It's just too bad that the trend doesn't continue into the
actual show.
Audio is very flat. I think all the dialogs are in mono. Oh well.
For what it's worth, "To Heart" is my favorite anime and I watch at
least one episode of it every week! The fact that I can stand to do
that probably means it's not that bad.
First image is from the opening sequence. I love the art work!
Second image shows transition and feathering problems. Look at the
distortions on the bottom of frame1 and top of frame2 and frame3.
Also note the feathering in frame3 and frame4. It just looks fuzzy
because the images are half-sized.
