It has ridiculous characters, ridiculous animation, and ridiculous
story. Now replace the "ridiculous" with "ridiculously good."
Remember how Gainax used to wow the otaku community with new and
exciting animation styles? Well, I watched Mahoromatic TV Special
before watching this and as far as I'm concerned, Gainax has dropped
to their lowest level ever. It's so bad that they have been added to
my blacklist along with GONZO. I'll talk more about that on that
review, so let's move along.
This amazing little gem is packed with eye popping animation
techniques. Some of them aren't really new, but they don't need to
be. All are used with impeccable timing and quality that surpasses
the rest. Seeing is believing, right? Here're a few examples.
Image1: This method used to be common in the old days. I think this
one is kind of a tribute to that.
Image2: Yes, swirling cloud has been done before, but these actually
swirl and deform instead of just rotating.
Image3: Most excellent fast-movement animation.
Image4: Momentary animation technique variation. Notice the detail of
the phone display, too.
Image5: Excellent artsy eye-catch images.
Image6: High-tech floating screens. They don't have the kind of
hand-drawn raw-ness that Nadesico's floating screens have, but these
are far more detailed.
Image7: Nice evening light view of the apartment complex.
Image8: Paper animation technique, which isn't new, but these are done
better than the ones used by Gainax.
Image9: Ridiculous amount of detail. We've reached the limits of DVD.
Image10: I don't think I saw this technique ever used before. She
falls out of the screen, then the emoticloud appears. The whole thing
happens so quickly, some might wonder why they even go to the trouble
of doing it, but this is what anime art is all about.
