Volume 3 has a more serious story, which was never animated. Hyoudo
is a (3rd rate) school bully who suddenly comes into power because
Nenji became a "nice guy" after Nanaka's accident. The story deals
with the complicated issues of good and bad, power, violence, and
peace. I don't think it would have made much sense to include stories
like this in the anime since the anime was really targeted at younger
audience.
This volume also has the field trip story, which was used as climax in
the anime. I think that's how the anime was, anyway. Of course, we
still have 9 more volumes to go in the manga, so even though it does
escalate the seriousness of the story, it's far from the climax.
