Animephile Rating: F (4.0)
- Video Scan Type : interlaced-TV (-2.5) -
This disc has almost perfect 3:2 pulldown encoded into the disc. dTV will
detect and reconstruct perfect progressive 24fps video from this DVD. There
are, of course, a few places where editing caused pulldown to drift, but it is
very minor.
- Aspect Handling : standard (-0.0)
- Compression : -0.0
- Video Separation : -2.0
- Scene Transition : -1.0
- Calibration : -0.5 -
Slightly washed out and black level could be better.
Comments:
In my R1 Nadesico review, I pointed out that R2 DVD has more rainbowing. This
is true. I also mentioned that R1 looks cleaner, but apparently, the picture
itself must be cleaner on R2 because dTV has more trouble sustaining 3:2
pulldown detection on R1 DVD. There must be noise that are not seen on R1
DVDs that affects the dTV software. This R2 DVD through dTV looks absolutely
fantastic (except for some rainbowing).
I consider Hoshino Ruri to be one of the most memorable characters ever
created and Nadesico will always have a place in my heart because it deals
with so many interesting aspects of anime (and its fans) within a fake world
that is very realistic.
First image shows distortion that happens during scene transistions. This is
exactly the same kind of distortion that shows up on "To Heart" DVDs. I put
some arrows to point out the distortion. you'll also notice interlacing
artifact. Don't worry. This is part of 3:2 pulldown. There is a possibility
that this particular one might not be a correct pulldown since it's part of
the transistion and any editing that mess up the pulldown would happen during
transition.
Second image shows rainbowing. Look at Ruri-chan's collar. This image should
be similar to the one I used for R1 DVD review.
