A lot like the My-HiME ending, this ending is also lacking, especially considering how good the rest of the show is. The ending has some very touching moments (more so than My-HiME), but it also has more awkward moments, so in the end, I say they're about equally lacking. The awkward moments feel like they just rushed the ending without really thinking it through. Too bad....

Do you realize Irina is the only (full time) meganekko otome in the whole series!? What a shame that she was just a side character. Note that Chie also wears glasses, but not full time.
Of all the anime I've watched over the years, this was the first time where I felt that her being... umm, fulfilled, would actually be better for the world! That's an achievement, I tell you. Think about it. If _it_ happened here, it would have caused far fewer deaths as well as far less destruction, AND the rest would have worked out basically the same way.
You can't tell from just this image, but Mashiro is really cute back there, trying to do what she can for Arika.
