This story is about Matsuo Nami, a 17-year (turning 18 in this volume)
old mahoutsukai who, to put it bluntly, is terrible at using magic.
That's a clever way to get around the fragility of magic in this
universe. As I mentioned before in novel 3 writeup, magic in this
universe is far too broad. Most magical girl shows have extremely
limited definition of magic, such as being able to turn into an adult,
which makes it so much easier to write a story around it. In this
case, by having a main character who can't use it well, the author can
focus on other things.
Before I dive into the dark side, I absolutely must comment on how
pretty Yoshidzuki-sensei's drawings are! Even if I couldn't read
Japanese, I'd pick these up for the art.
Now to the dark side. Let me rephrase that previous sentence. If I
couldn't read Japanese, I might like this better! Every single
character, all so beautifully drawn might I add, feels out of place.
They're so one-dimensional, predictable, and therefore boring or even
annoying. There's just no depth to the story, especially compared to
the novels.
And besides, there's no Yume-chan ^_^;;
I'm serious. Yume is the kind of character that people want to cheer
for. And eventually, she shows off her _powerful_ magic. It's such a
good combination! I don't feel anything like that for Nami.
I'm going to pick up the rest of the volumes anyway, because the
drawings are so pretty!
