Will you people point out my stupidity once in while, please!? I
finally got a chance to borrow the R1 DVDs, so I decided to do a
comparison. For whatever stupid reason, I didn't realize that R2s
were progressive, all this time! Says a lot about my old reviews....
When I read my old writings, I am often abhorred at my lack of
knowledge back then. Unfortunately, I have better things to do than
to rewrite everything. Besides, even if I were to rewrite them, I'll
probably hate the way they're written when I look at them again later
anyway.
But still, this kind of blatant errors should be corrected. And I'm
still puzzled at the fact that nobody ever pointed this out to me. Is
everyone just laughing at me for getting it completely wrong?
Well, here are some comparison images. Left side is always R2, which
leaves the right side as.... R1. That's right! yokudekimashita!
Not so surprisingly, R2 has slightly better compression. On the other
hand, R1 seems to have better colors and sometimes, R1 is sharper,
too. Actually watching the video, though, I prefer R2. It feels more
film-like, although the crawlies tend to ruin that feeling.
R1 does have hardsubs here and there as can be seen in the second
image. As far as the chroma separation artifacts are concerned, it is
variable. Sometimes, R2 is better and other times, R1 is better. In
the end, I think they're pretty similar. Oh, and of course, R1 is not
progressive.
