Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho, Complete Book

There's always a lot more to Shinkai-san's works than what's in the animation. There's very helpful scene-by-scene commentary in the book. There's even a full color manga, "Tou no Mukou," which, after a vast expansion, turned into "Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho." I find "Tou no Mukou" to be incredibly sweet and touching. It reminds me of "Kanojo to Kanojo no Neko." Of course, there are illustrations and interviews, too. I'd say it's a must have for full appreciation of the work.

Image 2 is from the back of the book. There's just the image of Velaciela in the middle of white background.

To go off on a tangent little bit, I like the use of the V-tail (usually used on high-efficiency planes like gliders), but the angle looks to be a bit too small for it to act effectively as elevators. Elevators are far more important than rudder on planes. I suppose it can get by since it is really a triple wing section design. Front wings can also be used as elevators, although the behavior would be a lot harder to control. Large crossing propeller is very neat, but I'm sure it's not practical due to the loss that would occur each time the wings pass by each other. A more practical way, though not as romantic(?), would be to use the technique used on helicopters. Just have one propeller and compensate for the roll with two smaller propellers sticking out on its sides. I think, given enough money and time, one can make an R/C plane of this design. Getting the front propeller to work would be very hard, though. And the jet will be replaced with a ducted fan, which must not be turned off, because it's impossible to restart in flight. I question whether it can actually fly with just the crossing propellers. Anyone want to throw some money at it and see what happens? Assuming one already has transmitter (probably 6 or 7 channels), receiver, servos, support equipment, and tools, just getting the ducted fan version with fixed front-wings to fly might not be too hard. I'm sure some otaku is starting to work on it already, no?
