Kasimasi ~Girl Meets Girl~ 1

So, here's a problem. I'm in a situation that makes it hard for me to say negative things about Akahori-san. I don't really want to say what that is, but I can give a hint: "GanMou!" Yeah, that probably doesn't mean anything to most people. In the end, it's not really all that important, so here I go.

Good news first. Art is pretty good. Let's just say that it's ordinarily cute and pretty. I'm kind of surprised I'm using the word "ordinarily" because it's actually really good. I must be spoiled or something.

Speaking of being spoiled, the timing for this series ending up in my hands gives it a severe disadvantage because I just got to know "Joshikousei - Girls High." What that means, is that, there's no way for it to escape me comparing the two.

In "Joshikousei - Girls High," the author is intimately aware of the characters she created. Even when she's exaggerating things to make fun of them, she's implicitly aware of what she's doing. This gives the characters a huge boost in livelihood and realism. Believe or not, this is surprisingly deep stuff. You can't take comedy lightly. Good jokes are pretty complicated.

In "Kasimasi ~Girl Meets Girl~," the author doesn't really understand the characters. This shows up as characters themselves not knowing what they're doing, wanting, or even thinking. There's this huge gap that makes me say, "huh?" while reading it. I think the premise is interesting. In fact, it's interesting enough by itself, that the whole attempt at explaining why it happened feels unnecessary. In other words, the alien stuff gets in the way of what should have been a more interesting main theme. It also detracts the realism from the story. The end result is that I can't see it as much more than a gag manga.

It's too bad too because the anime has an all star cast (Ueda Kana, Horie Yui, Tamura Yukari, Shintani Ryouko, Asano Masumi, et al.). I never saw a single episode of it, nor will I ever watch it. It's a good thing I got the manga first because I had doubts about it. Manga is cheap. DVDs are not.
