During dark static or mostly static scenes, colors keep changing in
steps. It appears that each key-frame starts off at slightly
different gain. It can be very annoying if your display is calibrated
to see details in dark scenes. I am going to call this "temporal
banding."
- Video Separation : -0.5 -
Newly added overlays (credits and such) have bad rainbowing, but that's not
all that important. Otherwise, it's similar to R2.
- Scene Transition : -0.0
- Calibration : -0.5 -
I thought R2 didn't have deep enough blacks. Well, now that I've seen this,
I think R2 had good blacks. They're close enough, I guess.
Comments:
First of all, this one does not suffer from the right column
reflection issue of R2 disc-1. That's good.
I don't know why I wrote "R1" on the images since they're All-Region DVDs.
Image1: Don't be fooled by what appears to be more compression artifacts in R2
area. R2 is sharper and therefore more JPEG artifacts show up. There is more
film-grain in R2, which is a good thing. R2 also uses more of the available
chroma range.
Image2: They must've piped the video through some aweful equipment to add the
English voice actor/actress credits. I didn't even have to draw a
line to distinguish the images.
