The Top Secret 1

Created/Updated 2008-02-18

Somewhere, I read that this manga series is to be animated sometime in spring of 2008, so I looked it up. After reading through a few informational sites, I decided to pick it up.

In the fictional near future, a new method of using MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) to read and form visual images from dead people's brains is developed. It can only be done with the brain taken out of the body (implies dead person) and there is no sound.

It's artistically a shoujo manga, with "beautiful" male characters and what not. However, it's much deeper than average shoujo, or just any average manga. There are scientific, political, philosophical, and moral implications to reading people's mind, dead or not. There's also the gruesome side of the kind of criminal minds that tend to end up at the laboratory.

Although the manga starts out with a story in America, it's only an introduction. Rest of the story focuses on lives of members of the one and only special forensics laboratory in Japan with the brain MRI capability.

It's beautifully illustrated (even the gruesome scenes), and stories are intriguing. It's not the easiest manga to read both in terms of language complexity and extreme visuals, but if you believe you can handle it, I can highly recommend it.
