I can see why this show is rated highly in Japan. It's wonderfully stupid yet meaningful. I hate the character designs, but I love the character designs. Yes, I know what I just wrote.

Unfortunately (really it is), I don't really care for this anime. First of all, I have a cultural background to understand most of the lifestyle quirks presented in this anime, yet I don't feel any nostalgia from them the way I did while watching "Tonari no Totoro." I think it's because the show leans too much towards the slapstick style comedy. Second, and more importantly, I personally can't relate to the main character, Hanada Ichiro. There's just not anything I can do about that. I just can't relate to the way this kid acts.

It's really too bad, because there's so much to love about this anime. The first thing I fell in love with is the casting of Ichiro's friend, Souta. Kuwashima-san deserves some kind of award for this role! "Impeccable" would be the word I'd use to describe it. In the scene where Souta is crying because Ichiro fell into the toilet (see screen capture), I was just melting with glee, hearing Kuwashima-san's voice acting. Words can't describe it. It's so good, I might continue buying this series despite the fact that I don't really care for the show itself. Besides, I think Jiro (the puppy) is adorable!

Anywho, I haven't decided whether I should keep buying or not, yet. We'll see.
