I've been holding off buying this one for a long time because it's
such an old title and Gainax is notorious for not taking good care of
their master tapes. Well, I was shopping for something used and they
had used copies, so I went for it. I guess I saved about 50 bucks.
To be honest -- but then I'm always honest :) -- it's pretty lame. But it's not trivially lame. A lot of the old anime has that somewhat of a lame feel to it. Animation is spectacular when you consider the fact that this was done in the late 80's. And when it comes down to it, this is like a prerequisite for all future anime viewing because so many later anime references this show, some parody and some homage. In that sense, it's a must watch, if not a must own. Since the source material is so bad to begin with, I doubt there would be that much difference between R1 and R2, although I've been proven wrong with Fancy Lala before. Make your own decisions.
