Animephile Rating: A (9.0)
- Video Scan Type : interlaced-TV (-2.5) -
See "other" section.
- Aspect Handling : standard (-0.0)
- Compression : -0.0 -
There's some noise in grey-colored areas, but I don't think it's a
compression issue and it's minor enough, so I'm not cutting any points.
- Video Separation : -0.0
- Scene Transition : -0.0
- Calibration : -0.0
- Other : +1.5 -
Panning scenes are progressive. Whatever algorithm they're using is
extremely primitive. Even if there's large amount of movement, it
will not detect 3:2 pulldown unless there is a PAN.
Comments:
Here's a surprisingly decent anime from Studio Xebec. After their
obscenely successful high-time with Nadesico, they've been on my radar
as a red mark because of their terrible downfall with "Detest Hina."
Fortunately, they've made some progress in the right direction it
looks like.
Dai-Guard may seem like an action-packed, "earth shattering" piece of
work, especially with ADV's twisted marketing words, but it's not.
It's mostly a low-key anime. Within its low-key actions, simple yet
distinct character designs, and obvious premise of invading creatures
vs. our team robot, lies realistic and intricate events that continue
to drive the plot.
It's most certainly not as multi-layered and complex as Nadesico was,
but it's far better than the "Abominate Hina." It's good to see
Studio Xebec going back to their roots after their misguided tour with
"Abhor Hina." I think I may just forgive Studio Xebec about the
"Despise Hina," now.... Then again, I couldn't let them off that
easily when I think about how repulsive "Loathe Hina" was.
DVD quality is quite good as well, making this a decent buy.
Image: Quite a bit of noise can be seen in the light blue area on the
left. Well, you can't see it in the picture since the noise is
temporal, but it's there. Trust me.
