Comments:
D4 Princess is otaku's anime. It's the kind of anime that is ANIME
and is proud to be ANIME. It's simple, has many unnecessary visual
and emotional moments, but is generally very cute and marketable. I
don't think D4 Princess was popular to the general public in Japan,
but I know it meant something to the die-hard otaku. I had the fansub
tapes for a long time and always felt bad that I didn't buy the real
thing. Well, I did finally.
To my disappointment, this is one of the earliest anime DVD mastering
attempts by Pony Canyon and shows many problems. Steel Angel Kurumi
also suffered from similar problems, but it was computer animated, so
the issues were less obvious. D4 Princess is cell animation, by the
way, except for the parts of the ending sequence. Pony Canyon
re-issued Kurumi, but for some reason, they didn't re-issue these. In
my opinion, these needed it more than Kurumi. Oh well. There's
nothing I can do about that, so I guess I'll just sit quietly and
watch these again.
Image1: Main show looks grainy, but it's still cute!
Image2: Notice horizontal grey lines. Very bad stuff. These are also
in the main show when there's a lot of vertical movements such as
vertical pans.
