Animephile Rating: F (4.0)
- Video Scan Type : interlaced-TV (-2.5) -
As far as interlacing is concerned, it doesn't look too bad because it's
blurry, which may be better on a setup that doesn't remove 3:2 pulldown, but
it's actually worse with correct equipment.
- Aspect Handling : standard (-0.0)
- Compression : -0.5 -
Similar to Bebop discs, most of the problem is with video separation, not with
compression. If it interests you any, this disc has only one layer for 100
minutes of anime. Every single R2 CCS DVD are 2 layers even for disc1, which
only contains 3 episodes.
- Video Separation : -2.0 -
I'd like to say it's better than Cowboy Bebop stuff. Thank goodness. Even
so, it leaves much to be desired in this department.
- Scene Transition : -0.0
- Calibration : -0.5 -
It's interesting how it's off slight to the dark land. But than, R2 DVD is
off to the slightly bright land. If I had to choose, I'd choose R2 because
this show is supposed to be a bright and happy show.
- Other : -0.5 -
We're losing some information! I admit that I would never have figured this
out if I didn't compare directly to R2 DVD, but it's there. Much of the
picture around the edges is not encoded into the disc.
Comments:
Look at the image. I separated it into 3 sections and marked them as R1
(region 1 Nelvana/Pioneer) and R2 (region 2 Emotion/Bandai).
First, look at Kero-chan's wings. Bad rainbowing on R1 release. No problem
on R2 release.
Now, look at the screen itself around the edges. See how the curtain. R1
version only has 2.5 sections whereas R2 version has full 3 sections and
little more. This is from the same scene. I checked to make sure! Some of
the ceiling is cut off on R1 DVD. You'll notice that Sakura's head is larger
on the R1 version. That's because everything is slightly zoomed in. We lose
some of the outer edge picture that way. It's also interesting to note that
despite the zooming, R1 DVD actually uses less of the available 720x480
resolution of the DVD. R1 DVD has more black empty areas around the image
than R2 DVD does.
Finally, look at the feathering on the sweat drop on R2 section. Feathering
is much worse on the R2 version. That actually means R2 is better because it
contains sharply defined 3:2 pulldown information.
BTW, this image is recompressed with high-quality JPEG compression. I did not
notice any extra artifacts doing so. I didn't want to waste my precious space
with another PNG file.
Oh, and for someone who spent almost 2,000 dollars on CCS DVDs, I'm happy to
report that R2 DVD is better in every respect. :)
