Comments:
It starts out a bit slow, just like the manga, but it picks up slowly
as the show goes on. I don't think it's going to be all that
meaningful to people who didn't read the manga, so many of the
episodes that follow manga closely feel like waste of time. I'd have
preferred if they focused more on new ideas that can only be done
using animation. As for voices, Kuwashima-san works surprisingly well
as Kagura. Asakawa-san's also unexpectedly great as Sakaki-san.
Chiyo sounds too unnatural, though. I still think Juri-chan (Ihata
Juri) would've been better for the role. One thing that surprised me
was how Tanaka-san just didn't feel like Yomi. Yukari and Minamo
works well, of course, but it would've worked just as well to swap
them. That'd have been like the original Nukunuku OAV :)
Image1: Outdoor scene. You might notice how everything feels a little
hazy. Practically the whole show has this slightly hazy feel to it,
like you're dreaming the whole thing. If it was any other show, I'd
have said "lack of contrast," but for Azumanga Daiou, I say it's
"dreamy." It works for me. Animation source is not terribly high
resolution, but it's not bad enough to be too bothersome. Azumanga is
all about characters anyway.
Note that there is another screencap in disc2 review.
