I've always wanted a decent LED light stick to replace chemical light sticks often used at Japanese-style live events. I've actually planned out what I'd need to do, but being a lazy bum that I am, I never did anything about it. But one day, I learned about multi-color LED flashlight being sold by number of on-line retailers, such as 4shopper.com and ThinkGeek.com. There are even reviews on-line, such as this one at Gear Diary.
I thought I could turn it into THE perfect light stick, so I bought one. To get right to the point, it's completely useless for my purpose because it uses RAW switching regulator with no circuits whatsoever to convert the output to DC. Here, pictures are worth a thousand words, so just take a look.
This is when the flashlight is projecting "white." It's rapidly switching among Red-Blue-Green LEDs. If it weren't moving, you'd think it's projecting something close to white. Actually, even if it's not moving, certain sensitive individuals will quickly get annoyed by the light. I know. I have a friend with very sensitive vision. By the way, he's not very fond of 1-chip DLP projection technology either. I can see the colors, but am not so annoyed by it.
So what? No one uses white-colored light stick at events anyway. You're right. Unfortunately, even the primary colors are pulse regulated, as can be seen below for red only:
Green only:
And blue only:
And we do need pink for certain events. Shintani Ryouko comes to mind. Obviously, this is no pink:
So in conclusion, I wasted $30.68. It's completely useless, unless I'm trying to induce seizures. Hmm, maybe....
